① Overview of This Trip to Hokkaido

Travel Itinerary and Number of People

  • Dates: Late January 2026 (2 nights, 3 days)
  • Number of guests: 2 adults (couple)

Destination and Route

Itami → Hakodate → Sapporo → Otaru → New Chitose Airport

② What was winter in Hokkaido really like? (Climate and cold)

Temperature and Weather

Lowest temperature and wind chill:
-11°C to -4°C.
Since there wasn't much wind, it didn't feel as cold as I expected.

Blizzard and Road Conditions

  • Hakodate and Sapporo: There is some snow, but the roads have been thoroughly plowed and are easy to walk on.
  • Otaru: There is heavy snowfall, and sidewalks are narrow in some areas, so please exercise caution.

Conclusion on Cold Weather Protection

As long as you dress warmly, you'll be fine.
My impression was, "It was colder than I expected, but I managed to handle it surprisingly well."

③ Attire and Items to Bring (In-Person Event)

What I actually wore

  • Upper body: HeatTech / fleece / down
  • Bottom half: Faux fur pants / Tights
  • Shoes: Snow boots

Things I'm glad I brought

  • Gloves
  • Knitted hat
  • Waterproof shoes

* When traveling to Hokkaido in winter, choosing the right clothes and shoes is really important.

④ [Day 1] Hakodate Sightseeing Report

📅 Day 1 | Itami → Hakodate (Focus on sightseeing)

✈️ Travel

  • ANA Flight 745
    Itami 11:10 → Hakodate 12:45
  • Arrival at Hakodate Airport around 12:45

🚍 Hakodate Airport → Hakodate Station

  • Arrive near Hakodate Station by airport bus around 1:15–1:25 p.m.
  • I bought a ticket for the Hokuto No. 5 Limited Express the next day at the station

🏨 Hotel

  • 1:25–1:40 p.m.
Check in luggage at Hotel MyStays Hakodate Ekimae

🍣 Lunch

We had originally planned to go to "Kuishinbo," but changed our plans due to time constraints.
I kind of regret not booking an earlier flight.

  • Uni Seiichiya (1:40 PM–2:30 PM)
The prices are a bit high, but the taste is excellent.
Since it’s winter, the sea urchin is red sea urchin.

🚶‍♀️ Afternoon sightseeing (Motomachi area)

  • 3:00 PM–4:15 PM (approx. 75 minutes)
  • Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse
I bought a cheesecake at Snufl's. It melts in your mouth beautifully.
  • Yawata-zaka
A spot offering a breathtaking view of Hakodate Harbor.

🌃 The night view from Mount Hakodate

  • 4:15–4:30 p.m. Ride the cable car
  • There are many foreign tourists, and the observation deck is crowded even before sunset
  • The cable car arrives in about 3 minutes
  • The wait is a bit longer on the way back

Highlights
I recommend stopping by the indoor observation deck on your way back to take in the night view.
Perhaps because it was winter, the city lights seemed to sparkle even more.

The observation deck was packed
I recommend stopping by the indoor observation deck on your way back

♨️ Evening Relaxation (Yunokawa Onsen)

  • 6:45 PM–8:00 PM
    Yunokawa Onsen "Yunohama Hotel"

We traveled by bus. It was nighttime, so we couldn’t see the coastline, but the hot spring itself was wonderful.
Even though the outside temperature was below freezing, the open-air bath was piping hot, and the contrast in temperature felt great.

🍽 Dinner

  • Lucky Pierrot Hakodate Station Branch

A Western-style restaurant with a unique atmosphere.
I recommend the Chinese Chicken Burger Set.
The burger, filled with sweet fried chicken, and the fries are absolutely delicious—and at around 1,000 yen, it’s a steal.

⑤ [Day 2] Hakodate → Sapporo

Hakodate in the Morning (Morning Market)

  • Kikuyo Cafeteria (6:30–7:15)
  • Wake up at 5:30 a.m.
  • There were hardly any tourists, so we were able to enjoy a comfortable meal
  • It was a bit of a shame that I didn't get much sleep

🚆 To Sapporo on the Hokuto Limited Express

  • Around 8:00 a.m. Departure from Hakodate Station
  • Duration: About 4.5 hours

Inside the train
Smooth ride with minimal vibration.
The snowy scenery is absolutely beautiful.

* Since the trip is long, it’s a good idea to bring a book, tablet, or headphones.
* We recommend reserving a reserved seat on Ekinet at least 30 days in advance (to get a lower fare).

Sapporo Sightseeing & Dining

Rokkatei Main Store

We ate some ice cream sandwiches and bought some souvenirs.

Rokkatei's Ice Butter Sandwich—the butter is rich and delicious!

Getting Around Sapporo

Sapporo Station → Subway → Susukino
Walk from Susukino to T-Mark City Hotel Sapporo.

Genghis Khan Daruma 4.4

It has no gamey smell, and the meat is tender and easy to eat.

There are lockers, so you don't have to worry about your clothes picking up any odors.
The best part is that you can go in from noon without a reservation. Since it was a weekday, it was relatively empty.

🍺 Sapporo Beer Museum

  • Visited around 5:00 p.m.
  • Free admission
  • Paid tasting area available

The museum has an extensive exhibition on the history of beer,
making it a must-visit spot for beer lovers.
The exhibition takes about 10 minutes to see, but we waited in line for about 30 minutes for the tasting.

🍜 Sapporo at Night

  • Around 7:00 p.m.: Menya Yukikaze, Susukino Main Store

This popular spot is sure to have long lines.
Waiting for about an hour and a half in -10°C weather was tough, but the taste was amazing.
It gets crowded after 6:00 PM, so I recommend visiting early.

⑥ [Day 3] Sightseeing in Otaru → New Chitose Airport

From Sapporo to Otaru

  • Departure at 8:00 a.m.
  • Travel by train
  • Leave your luggage in the lockers at Otaru Station

Sightseeing in Otaru

The snowy landscape was beautiful, and the snow was light and powdery.
I really felt the essence of Hokkaido.

Kitaichi Glass Outlet

I found the exact same product I bought nine years ago still on sale.
I was impressed by the company’s commitment to making the same product over the years and its unbeatable quality.

Otaru Canal

A classic spot where the winter snowy scenery really shines.

🍰 Desserts & Seafood

  • LeTAO Main Store
The Double Fromage is rich and creamy, making it perfect for cold winter days.
  • Donbei Otaru Canal Branch
The seafood bowls feature fresh ingredients, are generously portioned, and offer great value for the price.

Otaru → New Chitose Airport

  • About 1 hour on the Rapid Airport Line

Things to Do at New Chitose Airport

  • Buying souvenirs
  • Taking a break in the card lounge
  • The walk to the security checkpoint was smooth

⑦ Summary of Expenses (Very Important)

Total amount

Total for 2 nights and 3 days: 171,167 yen (for two people)
Per person: approx. 85,600 yen

Breakdown

  • Flight + Hotel + Insurance
     Approximately 29,500 yen per person
    • It was cheap because I booked it through a package tour from Hankyu Travel
  • Transportation costs (limited express trains, JR trains, subways, buses, etc. )
    Approx. 14,000 yen per person
  • Food expenses (seafood, Genghis Khan barbecue, ramen, etc.)
    Approx. 23,000 yen per person
  • Souvenirs, cafes, and miscellaneous shopping
    Approx. 19,000 yen per person

*There was a lot of travel—from Hakodate to Sapporo to Otaru to New Chitose—
. I also ate plenty of seafood, so my food expenses were a bit higher than usual.

What's the going rate for something like this?

Typical price range for a 2-night, 3-day trip with the same itinerary (per person)

  • On a budget: 65,000–70,000 yen
  • Standard: 75,000–85,000 yen
  • All-Inclusive Package: 85,000–95,000 yen

👉 This time, it was right in the middle of the price range—leaning slightly toward the higher end.
Considering what we got, I think it was pretty good value for the money.

Comparison with general market sentiment

  • We were able to make the most of the winter off-season
  • I found a good deal on a flight and hotel
  • We didn't compromise on food or souvenirs

As a result,
I ended up with a balanced spending plan where I cut back where I could and spent where I needed to.

⑧ Things to Keep in Mind When Traveling to Hokkaido in Winter

Shoes are really important

Snow boots with slip-resistant soles are a must.
To be honest, sneakers are pretty dangerous.

Pack light

Walking on snowy roads with a stroller is surprisingly tough.
I recommend waiting until the end to buy all your souvenirs.

Allow plenty of time for travel

Train and bus delays are common in winter.
It’s a good idea to plan for a 30-minute buffer before your next appointment.

Taking into account the risk of delays due to weather conditions

There is a possibility of delays or cancellations for both flights and JR trains.
It’s best not to schedule any important plans for the day after you return home.

⑨ What I liked about the trip and areas for improvement

What I liked

  • The winter scenery is simply beautiful
Hakodate and Otaru in the snow are in a league of their own.
  • Highly rated by foodies
Seafood, Genghis Khan, and ramen—all winners.
  • Fewer tourists
It was easy to take photos, and I was able to explore at a leisurely pace.

If I go there next time, this is what I'll do

  • Adjusting Your Clothing
If you dress too warmly, you’ll get too hot indoors. Layering is the best way to adjust.
  • Leave more breathing room in your schedule
If you pack too many trips into your schedule, you’ll get tired easily in the winter.
  • Further narrowing down the places I want to visit
I want to cut back on "sightseeing just for the sake of seeing" and focus more on hands-on experiences.

⑩ Summary | Winter in Hokkaido is recommended for people like this

Who This Is For

  • People who want to enjoy winter scenery and snow
  • People who enjoy food-focused travel
  • People who want to avoid the crowds and take their time sightseeing

People who aren't suited for this

  • People who really can't stand the cold
  • People who find it difficult to walk on snowy roads
  • People who want to work on a tight schedule

Overall impressions

As long as you take proper precautions against the cold,
winter in Hokkaido turned out to be a much more comfortable and appealing travel destination than I had imagined.

The scenery, food, and value for money were all top-notch,
and it was the kind of trip that left me thinking, "I want to go back in the winter."
